Flameware FAQ

What is Cook On Clay flameware?
Flameware is a specially formulated type of clay body, different than earthenware or stoneware, that withstands thermal shock and avoids cracking in high-heat cooking environments. Our pots can go from the refrigerator or freezer into a hot pre-heated oven or grill. Cook on Clay makes flameware pots for preparing and presenting foods from our backyards, local farms, and international recipes.

Why use Cook On Clay flameware?
Cook on Clay pots are beautiful and durable, able to withstand very high heat. The quality of heat in clay pots offers superior cooking performance. Our pots are also easy to clean and healthy for you and the environment.

Can you use it on the grill or under the broiler?
Yes. All our flameware pots can be used under the broiler, on the grill, and in a pre-heated oven.

Can you use it on the stovetop?
Yes. All our round pots may be used on a stovetop. Some of our products are designed specifically for this purpose. The general rule is that the heat source (oven, grill, electric coil, gas flame, broiler) should mirror the shape of the bottom of the pot. Do not use flat-bottomed pots such as Platters on the stovetop.

Can you use it in the microwave?
Yes. Many of our customers report using their pots in the microwave with no problems.

Can it go in the freezer?
Cook on Clay flameware may be stored in the fridge or freezer, and then directly put onto a source of heat.

How does it clean up?
Cook on Clay pots are completely dishwasher safe and extremely easy to clean with a bit of soaking, soap, and water. Feel free to use a scouring pad as it will not harm the surface. Baked-on foods can be removed by simple scrubbing with soap and water — you will be amazed by how easily foods release from our pots’ surfaces.

Can I really put it in the dishwasher?
Don’t be afraid to run your Cook on Clay pots through the dishwasher — it is a great way to remove residual oils.

Do you have to heat the pot with the oven?
No. Even cold from the refrigerator or freezer, our pots can be put directly into a hot pre-heated oven, on the stovetop, or onto a hot grill. This is one of the appeals of Cook on Clay cookware.

How strong are they?
Our flameware pots have a durable, non-porous surface that resists scratches. They are made to last for generations. (It is important to remember that our pots are made of clay so chipping and breaking can occur if dropped or banged.)
The surfaces of Cook on Clay pots will change through use and over time. This is a natural part of the maturation process, creating a rich patina and history of use.

Are the pots really safe to use?
Yes, our pots are really safe. Made with non-toxic earth materials (no lead or mercury) are used to formulate the claybody and glazes. Our pots are fired to 2450 degrees Fahrenheit over a period of 25 - 30 hours in a clean-burning propane-fueled kiln.

All materials are rendered inert (chemically inactive) during the firing process and remain non-toxic throughout the life of the pot.

What specific materials do you use?
CLAY BODY: Spodumene, Fire Clay, Ball Clay, Feldspar, Pyrax

GLAZES: Feldspar, Silica, Kaolin, Calcium Carbonate, Bone Ash, Red Iron Oxide, Titanium Dioxide

The surface of your pot naturally changes with use and over time. This is a natural part of the maturation process, creating a rich patina & history of use. If you wish, a bit of vegetable oil rubbed into the surface after cleaning will rid the surface of “discoloration”. Pots may be used in the oven, under the broiler, on the grill and stovetop all depending on the shape & structure. Please read the care and use instructions enclosed with your pot. The pots may easily be transferred from the refrigerator or freezer to a hot cooking environment and back again.
